WiLS and RL&LL Annual ILL MeetingThe third joint meeting sponsored by Resources for Libraries & Lifelong Learning and WiLS was held on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Pyle Center in Madison.

9:30-10:45 – Keynote: Rethinking Resource Sharing Principles (presentation pdf)
David Atkins, Head of Resource Sharing and Document Delivery at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville

Librarians from ASERL, a consortium of southeastern research libraries, created  a needs assessment and best practices survey. For a significant portion of the survey, the group used ALA’s Reference and User Services Association (RUSA)/Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) recently devised “Rethinking Resource Sharing (RRS) Best Practices Checklist.” Comprised of technical, public service, and policy best practices, the checklist is designed to promote dialogue and change.  This program discusses the survey project, the virtues and limits of the RRS checklist, and next steps for both ASERL and RUSA.

1:00-2:00OCLC Track: WorldCat Resource Sharing (presentation pdf)
Mark Beatty, WiLS

Spend an hour with Mark Beatty learning about and discussing the non-stop and frenetic pace of WorldCat Resource Sharing (WRS) enhancements.  The recent fast pace of change will only increase as OCLC moves the WRS service off of FirstSearch and onto the new Web-Scale Management Services (WMS) platform by early Summer 2012.  During that time some major milestones that we will talk about are likely to include:

New Assessment Tools, like the Lender String Report

Article Exchange, for cloud based delivery of digital files

Copy and Loan Queues

Alerts fields

Conditionals, re-evaluating the process

Email ILL, to non-OCLC lenders

Self-administration of authorizations

Working across OCLC services

Plus the fast track of migration to the WMS platform.  There are Alpha testers now, Beta testers in September, and quarterly major updates to the full migration.  Join in for a lively and fast paced session.

2:00-2:15 Break

2:15-3:30 Licensing and Copyright in ILL
Natalee Hattig, Electronic Resources Librarian at UW-Madison (presentation pdf)
Jeff Brunner, Electronic Resources Librarian at UW-Oshkosh (presentation pdf)

Although Natalee and Jeff currently work as electronic resource librarians, they both have extensive experience with Interlibrary Loan in past lives. These two roles have given them a unique perspective on copyright law, subscription licenses, and local library policies. In this session they will talk about the many ways that ILL and Electronic Resources teams can work together to navigate these complicated issues. They will also discuss the  potential for change in copyright law that could affect interlibrary loan in the near future.
