Call to Action: Ask Senators to Protect LSTA and IAL Funding

Now that the “Dear Appropriator” letters have started to circulate in the Senate, it’s time to ask Senators to preserve over $210 million in federal library funding. One letter asks the Senate Appropriations Committee to fully fund the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and the second letter asks for full funding for the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. Advocacy Alert: Federal Library Funding

Last week, the White House released its budget proposal for FY2019 with a proposed significant cut to federal library funding. The administration’s budget proposal eliminates the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and eliminates the $27 million Innovative Approaches to Literacy program administered by the Department of Education. Common School Funds, used to purchase library books and other instructional materials, are in jeopardy. Two bills – Senate Bill 713 and its companion bill Assembly Bill 857 – were introduced on Monday that would end the Common School Fund as we know it.

Advocacy Alert: Net Neutrality

What Happened:

The day before Thanksgiving, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Pai publicly shared his plan to dismantle network neutrality protections approved by the FCC in 2015 and affirmed by the federal appeals court in 2016. The new draft order is scheduled to be voted on by the five FCC commissioners on December 14. Read more

Right now, the members of the “Labor HHS” Subcommittees are working on the FY18 budget. If your Representative and/or your Senators sit on the all-important “Labor HHS” Subcommittees, please ask them to fund LSTA at $186.6 million and IAL at $27 million in FY 2018.   Read more
