Organizations of all kinds create and use a wide variety of digital resources in the course of business. These resources represent each organization’s intellectual capital and, as such, have value and need to be carefully managed and preserved. While many of the traditional resources found in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions–books, photographs, objects–can survive for years with no intervention, digital content is much more fragile. Managing it requires ongoing care and preservation activities to ensure continued access far into the future.
This workshop—sponsored by Minitex and based on the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Outreach and Education (DPOE) Program curriculum—introduces fundamental concepts for managing your digital content over time through a series of six modules. Read more

Do you work on digital projects at your library? Consider joining the new Upper Midwest Digital Creators and Curators Google Group! This group is open to all digital content creators, curators, and managers working in libraries, archives, museums, and historical societies in the Upper Midwest. It’s a place to discuss ideas, tips, news, and training opportunities regarding digital collection development, digital content management, digital preservation, and related issues.
If you have never used Google Groups before, the functionality is not all that different from a listserv . You can still use your email to read and reply to messages, or you can visit the Google Group webpage to view messages (NOTE: you need a Gmail email address to be able to reply to or post messages via the web interface, or to manage any notification preferences).
The group is moderated by staff from Minitex (Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota) and WiLS (Wisconsin). To join the group, head to groups.google.com/group/umwdigital and choose “Apply to join group” or contact Sara Ring, Minitex () or Emily Pfotenhauer, WiLS () to request an invitation.

At the turn of the 20th century, most American cities of any size had a family-run department store (or two or more) entrenched in their downtowns. By New York, Chicago, or Philadelphia standards, Wisconsin department stores were small and modest, but they served their communities well. Michael Leannah, author of the new book Something for Everyone: Memories of Lauerman Brothers Department Store from the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, has curated a new online exhibit of classic Wisconsin department stores for Recollection Wisconsin. To research this feature, Leannah visited the sites of former department stores in Kiel, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, and Oshkosh and was pleased to discover that many of these unique buildings are still standing.
The historic photos in the exhibit exhibit come from the digital collections of libraries and archives around Wisconsin:
