Webinar series — Managing Digital Content Over Time: An Introduction to Digital Preservation

Organizations of all kinds create and use a wide variety of digital resources in the course of business. These resources represent each organization’s intellectual capital and, as such, have value and need to be carefully managed and preserved. While many of the traditional resources found in libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions–books, photographs, objects–can survive for years with no intervention, digital content is much more fragile. Managing it requires ongoing care and preservation activities to ensure continued access far into the future.

This workshop—sponsored by Minitex and based on the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Outreach and Education (DPOE) Program curriculum—introduces fundamental concepts for managing your digital content over time through a series of six modules. Read more

2014 Western Wisconsin Educational Conference

The annual 2014 WWEC (Western WI Educational Conference) will take place at the Lacrosse Center in Lacrosse, WI on Friday, February 21st from 8AM-2:30PM. CONTENTdm Office Hours

OCLC has announced that it will hold open office hours for CONTENTdm users on a regular basis. There will be two sessions a month, on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday, starting today!

CONTENTdm “quick start” office hours
Just getting started, or bringing on new staff? Starting January 14 at noon Pacific, Geri Ingram will hold office hours on the second Tuesday of every month.  No registration necessary.

CONTENTdm technical office hours
Got technical questions? Starting January 23 at 11 AM Pacific, Christian Sarason will hold CONTENTdm office hours for open discussions on technical topics – for example, Google Analytics, API integration, customizations, or usability issues.

WLA Paralibrarian of the Year Award

The Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Paralibrarian of the Year Award, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Information Studies, recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, including all library support staff who do not currently have an MLIS, in providing excellent library service in Wisconsin.  This award places special emphasis on efforts to further the role of paralibrarians and library support staff in the library profession.  The award winner will have the opportunity to receive an optional scholarship to complete either a bachelor’s of science or master’s degree in information science.  Both degrees can be completed online, onsite, or in a hybrid format.  Apply by February 1st

Learning Opportunity – Collective Insight: A Discussion About the Impact of Shared Data on Libraries

You’re invited to attend a virtual networking event to discuss with fellow librarians the impact of shared data on our libraries.

In 2013, the OCLC community explored the concept of shared data and the implications on library success during the Collective Insight series. We discussed topics such as “linked data,” “big data” and “data visualization.” Now, we would like you to join our discussion and share ideas on how you can leverage shared data and strengthen the services you provide.
