June 6th will be the 2014 Lake Superior Library Symposium, a great opportunity to spend the day with our colleagues “North of Highway 8”. They are accepting presentation proposals until March 17th.

As you all know, February is Love Your Library month, as well as the month you stock up on orange conversation hearts so you can make it through the rest of the year.
What? Is that just me? Oh.
Regardless, we’ve have really had a great time stalking our members to find out what they are doing to celebrate this month. Here are some highlights:

The BadgerNet broadband network is about to get a lot faster, thanks to a $4.2 million dollar federal grant to expand and upgrade its fiber optic network between April and November of this year. Read more about it from madison.com.

A new digital collection from the University of Wisconsin-Stout Archives looks at more than a century of vocational education in northwest Wisconsin. Read more

A new pilot collaboration between UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and the Baraboo Public Library allows cardholders to have borrowing privileges for both locations and their respective library systems with a single, integrated library card. Cardholders’ borrowing privileges will extend to the libraries of the other two-year campuses and the 53 South Central member libraries.

The Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Paralibrarian of the Year Award, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Information Studies, recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, including all library support staff who do not currently have an MLIS, in providing excellent library service in Wisconsin. This award places special emphasis on efforts to further the role of paralibrarians and library support staff in the library profession. The award winner will have the opportunity to receive an optional scholarship to complete either a bachelor’s of science or master’s degree in information science. Both degrees can be completed online, onsite, or in a hybrid format. Apply by February 1st

The White Rose was a small, non-violent Nazi resistance group formed in 1942 by University of Munich students in Germany that spearheaded a nine-month anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign calling for active opposition to Adolf Hitler’s regime. And now through January 24th, the Marathon County Library Downtown branch is hosting an exhibit about the group, one of the first places to see it.

Madison Public Library and WYOU have embarked upon an exciting and innovative partnership. WYOU, a local public access television station which has struggled since state law in 2010 slashed its budget, will find a new home in the library and in turn bring Madison Public Library a host of new volunteers and media experts and expand its potential as an incubator for community projects.
