Wisconsin’s Rich Food Heritage
Friday, September 20, 2013
Steenbock Library at UW-Madison is celebrating Wisconsin’s wonderful food heritage with cookbooks, food tastings and a talk by a culinary historian Traci Nathans-Kelly. Food and eating satisfy more than nutrition; our culinary traditions reflect our culture and history. Cookbooks are shedding new light on women’s, local, and national history. Humble recipes hold hidden information about the lives of ordinary people as well as their churches, organizations and communities.
5:30–6:50 pm, Steenbock Library: Browse the 5,000-volume cookbook collection, watch cooking demos, sample foods, and learn about local food groups
7–8 pm, Ebling Symposium Center, Microbial Science Building: Hear Traci Nathans-Kelly present “Porcupine Meatballs: Finding History in Community Cookbooks”
Co-hosted by Steenbock Library with special guests Culinary History Enthusiasts of Wisconsin (CHEW), REAP Food Group, Food For Thought Festival, the GreenHouse Residential Learning Community, and Wisconsin Local Foods Journal.
