WiLS has just learned about an open source resource that we want to share. Unpaywall is an open database of more that 24 million free scholarly articles. They harvest Open Access content from over 50,000 publishers and repositories, and make it easy to find, track, and use. There’s a Chrome browser extension and available integrations into a variety of link resolvers. Users of Dimensions, Web of Science and Scopus can already access the data through those platforms as well. Check in out!

Eleven U.S. colleges and universities that partnered with Rice University-based nonprofit publisher OpenStax last summer to encourage the use of freely available learning materials expect to save their students nearly $17.4 million on textbook and materials costs in the coming academic year. Most of the projected savings — $10.7 million — are a result of initiatives implemented during OpenStax’s institutional partnership program.

Open Educational Resources (OER) are on the minds of many librarians across the state as a way to further the library’s educational mission, to reduce educational costs for students, to retain access to and leverage faculty publications, and to broaden access generally to educational materials. A number of colleges and organizations have launched OER initiatives and in this webinar on Friday, September 7th at 1:00pm, we will learn more about four of them: Chippewa Valley Tech’s Affordable Resource Movement Initiative, DPI’s WISELearn initiative, UW-Stout’s E-ffordabilty Summit, and UW-Milwaukee’s OER work. We’ll also hear what other states are doing to support OER and what is on the horizon for the Community for Open Wisconsin, the WLA OER Special Interest Group.
Presenters: Bob Butterfield (UW-Stout), Vince Mussehl (Chippewa Valley Technical College), Elizabeth Neuman (DPI), Kristin Woodward (UW-Milwaukee)

These webinars are designed to do all the same things as WiLSWorld – connect our member community around important issues, foster the exchange of ideas, and help members form professional connections and collaborations to get done what they need to get done.
The meeting will be recorded and shared but we do hope to see you there! If you have suggestions for other topics you’d like to hear more about or that you’d like to share with other WiLS members in WiLSWorld Shorts, contact us at .

Inside Higher Ed published a fascinating report on a large-scale study conducted at the University of Georgia. The study showed a measurable improvement in grades in classes that switched to OER textbooks. It’s a great story, and might be helpful in making the case for OER on your campus!

The Ontario College Libraries have launched their new Open Educational Resources Toolkit. The OER Toolkit aims to improve equitable access to open learning resources and services to college students by providing a province-wide academic support platform for faculty to use while designing courses and assignments. The Toolkit is a one-stop guide to open educational resources, providing faculty and library staff with tools and information to understand, engage with, create, and sustain OER in their work and practice. The Toolkit is designed to be used by anyone involved with OER at an academic institution, whether you are part of a team that is collaborating to create OER, a library staff member who is supporting OER development and use, an advocate for OER at your institution, or an instructor seeking to incorporate OER and open pedagogy in the classroom. The primary purpose of this Toolkit is to support faculty and library staff at Ontario colleges; however, it is openly available for use beyond the Ontario college community.
You can learn a lot more about the toolkit (and try it out!) at https://www.ocls.ca/news/ontario-college-libraries-launch-oer-toolkit
