9:00 – 9:30 Registration and Coffee

Sponsored by Backstage Library Works

9:30 – 9:45  Welcome

9:45 – 10:45  Let’s Get Visible!

Karla Smith, ILS Manager, Winnefox Library System

Linked data for libraries seems to be the latest and greatest revolution in how bibliographic information is presented to users since MARC. Who knows if it will survive, morph, or be superseded. However, for now, Winnefox has hopped on the train and hopes it will bring new patrons to our resources. We have purchased and implemented SirsiDynix’s BLUECloud Visibility product which, in partnership with Zepheira, converts our records to BIBFRAME and publishes them to the semantic web. This presentation chronicles our journey.

11:00 – 12:00  Linked Data and Library Discovery

Steve Meyer, Data Strategist, UW-Madison Libraries

This talk will present on work at UW-Madison to enhance our library catalog with info cards for the authors of bibliographic works using Linked Open Data sources. At the heart of this work is a locally developed code library that serves as a reference implementation for working with bibliographic and Linked Data. Included in this presentation will be an introduction to Linked Data, a comparison with traditional bibliographic data and the basic technologies, standards, and concepts behind Linked Data such as RDF, graph structures and SPARQL. The goal of the work presented in this talk is to explore ways to provide greater context for library resources from data sets on the Web that are not traditionally curated by libraries.

12:15 – 1:30  Lunch & OCLC Update

Meryl Cinnamon, Member Relations Liaison, OCLC

Sponsored by OCLC

Enjoy lunch and some informal time to connect with your colleagues along with an update on the OCLC cooperative. We will look at what’s new with products and services and review the types of resources and learning opportunities that are available to the library community through OCLC’s Research and WebJunction teams.

1:45 – 2:45  Core Metadata Project: Harmonizing Legacy Metadata for the Future

Ann Hanlon, Head of Digital Collections and Initiatives, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Nathan Humpal, Catalog and Metadata Librarian, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The Libraries at UWM have been creating digital projects since 2002 – there are now fifty-four digital collections available with more than 130,000 digital objects, and more on the way. Recent developments, including increasing paths for discovery beyond the local interface via sites like DPLA and our own discovery layer for library materials, meant that it was time to review our metadata guidelines. This presentation will cover our efforts to revise existing metadata and develop core guidelines to ensure interoperability with other systems and consistency across our digital collections.

Core Metadata Project Documentation (.doc), Type Metadata (.doc), and Vocabularies (.xls).

Katie Dunn, Electronic Resources Librarian, University of Wisconsin Law Library
Dorothea Salo, Faculty Associate, UW-Madison SLIS
