Unpaywall

WiLS has just learned about an open source resource that we want to share. Unpaywall is an open database of more that 24 million free scholarly articles. They harvest Open Access content from over 50,000 publishers and repositories, and make it easy to find, track, and use. There’s a Chrome browser extension and available integrations into a variety of link resolvers. Users of Dimensions, Web of Science and Scopus can already access the data through those platforms as well. Check in out!

Jessamyn West has been helping people with their computers in rural Vermont for 15 years and she’s created a simple privacy toolkit to help people understand the complicated world of online privacy. She’ll share her talk and the resources she uses to support the talk so that more librarians can help their patrons stay safer and more confident online.

Meet the Presenter

Jessamyn West has been speaking on the intersection of libraries, technology and politics since 2003. Her specific interest areas are:

The digital divide and its effects on library services
Legislation that affects library services such as CIPA, the USA PATRIOT Act and copyright laws
Rural libraries using new technologies to make the most of their small budgets, spaces, and staff

She has given presentations in thirty-eight U.S. states, three Australian states, and six Canadian provinces. She has given workshops, keynotes, and all-day sessions on technology and library topics. She has written book introductions and chapters and edited two compilations. Librarian.net, her professional blog, just celebrated its twentieth year online and was one of the first librarian blogs. While she travels and speaks often, her main work is at home in Orange County Vermont, helping libraries and librarians make sense of technology and teaching adult education classes in basic technology topics. She has been teaching basic technology classes for twenty-five years.

WiLS January 2019 Staff Interview: Jeff Brunner, Community Liaison and Service Specialist

You may have noticed that WiLS has some new faces among its staff. We are excited to grow our skills and improve our services by bringing new members into our team while also leveraging the experience and strengths that our existing team contributes. In the coming months, we will be sharing a little more about WiLS staff members, both new and experienced, in their own words.

Last year, we launched our Ideas to Action Fund, a grant program designed to help our members move their good ideas into practice. We awarded funds to six libraries and provided some project management for a few of them to help move their projects forward.
