“How can I help my kids get better search results out of my catalog?”
Answer: Whether a librarian or their students are looking within the framework of a Reading Program or just searching by subject, lots of libraries are working with older catalogs with records from an array of sources –or hand-cataloged– are by now have lots of antiquated or politically sensitive terminology, or inconsistent Reading Program information.
Librarians, teachers and students alike would like their records to be more up-to-date and uniform. In one data service run, Mitinet can work on an entire Union Catalog database to perform Matching for Lexile®, Matching for Accelerated Reader®, Matching for Fountas & Pinnell®, plus Subject Heading Updates to Sears21, Library of Congress, Children’s LC or any combination of the three; add missing state and national award notes; add Kid-Friendly™ subject headings; remove unwanted terminology such as “Juvenile Fiction” or “Juvenile Literature” and more.
For districts with a Union Catalog such as Follett Destiny, Mitinet Library Services, www.mitinet.com, works on the MARC metadata to everyone’s benefit, work that can be handled seamlessly to perform the export, updates and re-importation of the file back into your automation system for you. We call it Full Circle Support™ and can run it at interval during the year –per your specifications– to keep these key content-related areas in the records current and best serving your library, saving staff’s time training and running services and directly benefiting your students.
If you are curious about how your library could benefit, Mitinet offers a complimentary Database Diagnostic for any size catalog. Our Data Services team can assess a copy of your records and with a quick turn-around time provide you with a detailed analysis of your MARC data (see sample link below). Please contact your Mitinet Rep Joe Abrisz, 800-824-6272 ext. 5213 or by email to with any questions or to request upload instructions.

At WiLS, we want to bring valuable information to our library partners, including information about the missions and big ideas of the vendors they may already do business with. Each month, WiLS interviews a vendor partner in order to bridge the gap and open the door to valuable collaborations. This month, we are delighted to share insights from Anton Borissov, Midwest Account Manager for ACS Publications.

One of our greatest joys at WiLS is hearing our members tell the stories of the big and important work they are doing – interesting new projects or initiatives, or even interesting and new approaches to old projects. And, in addition to hearing about it, it makes us even happier when we can share those stories with other members. Each month, WiLS is proud to feature an interview with one of our library members. This month, we interview Pete Gilbert, Director of the Seeley G. Mudd Library at Lawrence University in Appleton.
