WLA Paralibrarian of the Year Award

The Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Paralibrarian of the Year Award, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Information Studies, recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, including all library support staff who do not currently have an MLIS, in providing excellent library service in Wisconsin. This award places special emphasis on efforts to further the role of paralibrarians and library support staff in the library profession. The award winner will have the opportunity to receive an optional scholarship to complete either a bachelor’s of science or master’s degree in information science. Both degrees can be completed online, onsite, or in a hybrid format. Apply by February 1st

“White Rose Movement” Exhibit Debuts at Marathon County Library Downtown Branch

The White Rose was a small, non-violent Nazi resistance group formed in 1942 by University of Munich students in Germany that spearheaded a nine-month anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign calling for active opposition to Adolf Hitler’s regime. And now through January 24th, the Marathon County Library Downtown branch is hosting an exhibit about the group, one of the first places to see it.

Madison Public Library Partners with Local Public Access Television Station

Madison Public Library and WYOU have embarked upon an exciting and innovative partnership. WYOU, a local public access television station which has struggled since state law in 2010 slashed its budget, will find a new home in the library and in turn bring Madison Public Library a host of new volunteers and media experts and expand its potential as an incubator for community projects.

St. Croix Falls Public Library and Elementary School Library Win Award

Hats off to the St. Croix Falls Public Library and Elementary School Library for winning the Standing up for Rural Wisconsin Schools, Libraries, and Communities award! Tony Evers will present the award on January 31st in Madison to Youth Library Services Director Cole Zrostlik and St. Croix Falls Elementary Librarian Rita Platt. Read more

New OCLC Research Report – Understanding the Collective Collection: Towards a System-wide Perspective on Library Print Collections.

This report brings together the important work that we have done for the community in providing a quantitative, analytic, system-wide view of library collections. This body of work has established an evidence base that has allowed and encouraged libraries to begin the shift from local provisioning of library collections and services to increased reliance on cooperative infrastructure, collective collections, shared technology platforms, and “above-the-institution” management strategies.

OCLC Publishes 2013 Annual Report

In his first report, which will be mailed to the membership this month, OCLC President and CEO Skip Prichard said that the cooperative’s current work is bold and important and that he is excited about the potential ahead. “Users’ expectations continue to accelerate, driving demand for new services and approaches that are cloud-based, mobile and social. With its new technological platform and cloud-based services, OCLC is well‑positioned and committed to serve libraries in a period of rapid change.”

ILS Consortium Study survey now available

WiLS is working on creating a “State of the ILS in Wisconsin” report, which will collect information from each ILS consortium that will be valuable when considering larger units of service for ILSs in the state.

The first step in this process is a survey of the ILS consortia in the state.
