Peer Council 2016 Program

9:00-9:30 Registration and coffee
9:30-9:45 Welcome
9:45-10:45 Keynote Address with John Chapman

John Chapman, Product Manager, Metadata Services, OCLC

As the scope of library collections and descriptive efforts has grown, existing methods of authority control have shown strain. Many libraries and cooperative initiatives have been experimenting with new methods of managing information around people associated with creative works. This talk will explore the reasons for these moves, and their implications for technical services workflows, library cooperation, and discoverability.

11:00-11:45 Community Practices in Authority Work

Amy Gannaway, Technical Services Consultant, South Central Library System
Lynn Whittenberger, Metadata Librarian, Raynor-Memorial Library, Marquette University

Finding the time and resources to do all the ongoing authority work you’d like to do is nearly impossible!  Join our co-presenters to hear about their local best practices for developing sustainable authority work processes.

12:00-1:00 Lunch (included with registration)
1:15-2:15 Discovery Service Implementation: What We Wish We Had Known, or Known to Ask

Ben Miller, Assistant Director, Resources for Libraries & Lifelong Learning, Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction
Terri Muraski, Information Systems Librarian, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Vince Mussehl, Library Services Specialist, Chippewa Valley Technical College
Kathy Setter, MORE Project Manager, Indianhead Federated Library System

Join this panel as they share their experiences, research, and wisdom on discovery service implementation, from a variety of settings and with a variety of products, including Primo, Encore, and EDS.  Attendees will gain a broader understanding of what to expect before, during, and after implementation and what to ask vendors to get the best information and avoid pitfalls.

2:30-3:45 Lightning Q&A

Drawn from suggestions from the community, this program is an opportunity to both ask your burning technical services questions of your peers and share your expertise with others.  No question is too big or too small, and no contribution is insignificant.

Do you have a question you’d like to add to the list?  Bring them to Peer Council!

3:45-4:00 Thank you and adjourn
4:00 Tech Services on the Terrace

An opportunity for some informal networking with your peers!

Thank you to all our members who participated in the Peer Council 2016 Community Survey, to our sponsor OCLC, and to our great planning team!
